170;

went out to dunsink observatory last night. it was a rare, beautiful clear night in dublin. a group of hillwalkers met to discuss getting started in astrophotography, so it couldn’t have been a better night to go out. i looked through the big south telescope (first photo) at the orion nebula, and then there was another smaller telescope set up to look at saturn. it was absolutely brilliant. it was so clear and good that you could see titan! i about froze my tail off running around taking pictures. i didn’t have a tripod, so i did what i could.

it still blows my mind how much scientific history dublin, and especially the institute, has. i learned last night that william hamilton (of our dearly loved Hamiltonian mechanics and equations) was irish, went to trinity, and spent loads of time at dunsink. and i’ve already mentioned erwin schrödinger.
